Recently a friend of mine went to a meeting sponsored by his MLM. A couple dozen people showed up. There were a few small groups that knew each other or were related, but by and large there was a mix of different people in different lines.

The plan was to do a quick around-the-room introduction of everyone that attended and move on to the agenda for the evening. They started with the gentleman that was hosting the event and moved on to my friend and through the rest of the room.

Ten minutes after the meeting was supposed to have ended, they finally got to the last person's introduction.

People did not just introduce themselves and move on. People told their stories. There were stories of success and stories of challenges. There were stories about family and there were product stories. Once one person started telling a story and someone else had a way to relate, a conversation would start about that particular issue.

There was a lot of head nodding around the room because they could generally all relate to each other in some way.

The biggest thing my friend took from the meeting was being surrounded and encouraged by successful, like-minded people. For once he was not surrounded by nineteen people telling him he was crazy and a pariah with only that one person in his business telling him that he was on the right track. All of the sudden, the ratio was completely reversed.

The meeting was refreshing and gave him the ambition and strength to start the week off stronger than he otherwise would have. He is now ready to work on building his business tomorrow and the next day. And by the time he gets frustrated and discouraged going into next week, there will be another meeting and a room full of people reminding him why he is doing what he is doing.

The meeting does seem to be one of the magical ingredients of network marketing. He could not really grasp the power of it before seeing it and experiencing it in person. He is already looking forward to next week.

My Family Was Really Poor...

When I contemplate my past, I sometimes wondered if I could achieve the success I have today much faster if I were born in a rich family.

Many people fantasize that if they inherited a large sum of money from relatives or marry a rich wife/husband, they would be able to be successful when they have a lot of money.

I was born in a very poor family.

Back in the 60s, my grandparents were killed by the communists during the riot crisis and as a result my parents had no choice but to move to a new country to start life all over again.

They came to Singapore with no friends and relatives.

Being alone, life was very tough for them because they started from scratch.

At a young age, my dad struggled as he worked as a shoe maker's apprentice for 10 years.

He was forced to learn the ropes and understand how to survive in this industry.

After 10 years, he decided to strike out on his own and open his own factory as a businessman.

Business was quite good initially but when the labor costs escalated, so did his business expenses.

His loyal customers started to outsource their production to overseas countries and much of his businesses were lost.

My parents had no choice but to close down the factory and open up their very own retail outlet.

They started to earn a lot of money and business was booming in the late 80s and early 90s.

As soon as the late 90s approached their luck ran out and things took a turn for the worse.

It happened during the dotcom bust where most retail businesses took a big hit.

My parent's businesses were not spared from this calamity.

Time and pride set in during their career and because of the comfort they experienced during their boom in the 80s and 90s they were not willing to take risks and start all over again.

As a result, business stagnated and it got worse during the September 11th incident.

To add salt to the injury, the SARS epidemic completely wiped out my parents' hope for financial success.

For the next 3-5 years, everything was in an utter state of confusion.

Business was bad and my parents debts started to escalate.

It became so bad that they were forced to sell off all their businesses in order to keep the banks from knocking down our doors and taking us to court!

My parent's experiences did give me useful insight and a powerful lesson.

I had learnt that in business building, you must be prepared to take chances and embrace change.

The global market is constantly expanding and just 'doing your best' isn't enough… you must DO WHATEVER IT TAKES.

Globalization is changing the way businesses operate and if you do not keep abreast with technology you will definitely have a hard time trying to catch up with the rest of the world.

The Internet has revolutionized the way people buy and sell and it will either work FOR you or AGAINST you..

If you are running your own business and you really desire success, you must make sure that you leverage on technology in order to automate mundane tasks.

If you want to be a email marketing specialist, then make sure you spend time and money in order to learn the latest methods and excel in it.

If you want to bring in big business and get your websites ranked on the first page of Google, then be prepared to pick up new skills and learn how search engines work.

At the end of the day, change is inevitable - but growth is optional.

If you choose not to grow, you will lose out because there is no such thing as staying in the same place because the rest of the world is moving forward and you will be left behind.
