U.S. Local Online Ad Revenues to Nearly Double to $42.5B by 2015

BIA/Kelsey's U.S. Local Media Annual Forecast (2010-2015) forecasts local online advertising to almost double from $21.7 billion in 2010 to $42.5 billion by 2015.

The research firm's estimate suggests that local online advertising will grow at around 14.4 percent per annum (compounded) over the next 5 years.

BIA/Kelsey expects the growth in local online advertising to be buoyed by growing local advertising overall, which is expected to grow from $136.3 billion in 2010 to $153.5 billion in 2015.

Nonetheless, local online advertising growth will significantly exceed overall growth, which BIA/Kelsey pegs at a compound rate of 2.1 percent per annum.

How Many People Really Use Twitter?

According to eMarketer, the number of people who really use Twitter is a fraction of the number typically reported by Twitter and the media.

Due to duplicate accounts, Twitter users quitting, Twitter users who read Tweets but don't really participate, and other reasons, eMarketer says the number of people who actually use Twitter is in the tens of millions... not in the hundreds of millions as suggested by the number of Twitter accounts (175 million in September 2010) and the visitors to Twitter.com (estimated to be 20-30 million per month).

Said Paul Verna, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, 'Twitter Users: A Vocal Minority':

"Twitter users are a sizable and growing bunch, but their numbers are considerably smaller than those disseminated by many media outlets and Twitter itself. In the US, this means tens of millions of users, as opposed to hundreds of millions."

eMarketer reckons 20.6 million U.S. adults will access a Twitter account (whether on Twitter.com or via a third party Twitter client) at least once per month in 2010, up 26.3 percent from 16.4 million last year.

The research firm expects usage to grow in the double digits through 2013, when nearly 28 million adults will use Twitter.

According to a MarketingSherpa survey of 1,100 email marketers, the most effective tactic for building an email list is to require people to opt-in to an email list when they buy a product or download a free gift.

Here, in order, are the top 10 list building tactics rated 'somewhat effective' or 'very effective' by MarketingSherpa's respondents:

1. Registration for downloads, etc (according to 96 percent of respondents)

2. Online events / webinars (96 percent)

3. Registration during purchase (94 percent)

4. Offline events / tradeshows (91 percent)

5. Email newsletter subscriptions (91 percent)

6. Mobile capture (89 percent)

7. Paid search (87 percent)

8. Co-registration programs (83 percent)

9. Social sharing buttons in email (62 percent)

10. Email forward-to-a-friend (56 percent)

Here are the top 10 list building tactics rated 'very effective' by MarketingSherpa's respondents:

1. Registration during purchase (rated 'very effective' by 58 percent of respondents)

2. Registration for downloads, etc (56 percent)
